"Joshua, Lad of Nazareth" by Geri Johnson
New copies in new condition.
A boy grew up in Nazareth at the beginning of the first century CE, a boy whose beliefs would one day impact the world. Much has become known of the man this boy became–Jesus of Nazareth–though his boyhood remains largely unknown, a source of great curiosity and speculation. He was raised in the same culture and traditions as all others of his age, so what led this lad on the path to share God's love with mankind?
Joshua, Lad of Nazareth is a persuasive blend of facts and storytelling offering a refreshing and plausible peek into what might have been.
Joshua (Yeshua), as his family called him, was like most boys who shared the same heritage, though he might have been a bit more curious than the average. He did chores at homes, cared for his younger siblings, played with friends, learned to read and write, studied the Hebrew scriptures in school, got in trouble more than once, and often wondered about nature and the world.
Like everyone in town, Joshua eagerly awaited the arrival of the camel caravans passing through town, with its eclectic travelers, news of the world and stories about strange lands. Much of Joshua's education in human nature came from the caravan travelers, as he listened to their stories and learned from them.
Once a lad graduated from the synagogue school, he began to work in a chosen occupation. It was common, therefore, to spend the years from ten to thirteen observing professions and trades, along with their advanced studies of the scriptures and religious laws.
Joshua learned to weave, make cheese, mill wheat, make bread, care for the animals, and tend a garden while at home. He worked with his uncles on the farm and the sea. While learning to make clay pots, he thought he might become a potter until he met a mathematician and learned about numbers. By the age of twelve, Joshua had a good idea of what it meant to be a carpenter, stonemason, fisherman, potter, weaver, merchant, teacher, rabbi, caravan leaders, farmer, goat herder and shepherd. It was the close working association with his father, Joseph, that led him to choose carpentry.
Yet, it was his nightly prayers and “little talks” with his Father in heaven, as he discussed his concern and experiences, that ultimately led Joshua to realize that he was being called to share God's love--but he did not know how he would do this.
